Back in 2006, I traveled to Canberra for a medical school interview. I assumed to book lodging when I arrived, but once I got there, a big convention was taking place and all the budget hostels and cheap hotels had no vacancies.
Hailing from the city-state of Singapore, the idea crossed my mind perhaps I could bed down in the terminal – but quickly found the local airport, unlike Singapore’s, is not open around the clock. Not knowing quite what to do and getting a bit desperate, I boarded a bus into town and started wandering in the direction of a gaming venue, believing it was a place to spend the night in a place that stayed open 24/7. That wouldn’t put me in the ideal condition for nailing an interview the following day, but as a cash-strapped student, a pricey hotel was out of reach.
The world needs more folks who show such kindness.
I must have looked lost since a young woman spotted me loitering in the city center and inquired if I was OK. I shared my situation and immediately she offered I could sleep on the floor in her student dorm at the local university – an ideal turn of events, as that’s where my interview was the following day. She went further by offering some food: one stuffed baguettes she had taken home her evening job. I had access to warm shower facilities and somewhere safe and secure for the evening.
In retrospect, it’s clear to me what a big chance she undertook being a woman letting a male stranger she had only just encountered sleep on her floor. At that time I existed within a bubble of male privilege and not even thinking to such safety concerns. As a dad now, I’m amazed she offered that help – but still deeply appreciative.
Ultimately, I did not go to that university, and I didn’t meet that kind stranger again, but I’ve never forgotten her amazing act of kindness. I hope karma has returned her act of kindness abundantly. We could all use more individuals who show such kindness.
