It might not have been at the identical stature as pardoning festive fowl, but the mayor of Miami-Dade experienced a ceremonial pardon event this week by formally pardoning the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“The swine has done no wrong. She deserves this act of mercy. Her criminal record is spotless,” Levine Cava said in a speech with clear references to the sheer volume of pardons issued since the commencement of a second term in office.
“Except perhaps for eating six or seven apples per day,” the mayor added. “Let this swine have a lengthy and joyful existence free from concern.”
The gathering, either celebrating or rejecting the local cultural practice of eating roast pork during the holidays, was founded to replicate the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The animal, contributed by a local firefighter, was given its name from the current slang trend of young people exclaiming “6-7” – originating from a hip-hop line – often seemingly at random. The phrase became so pervasive that a prominent word reference recently made “6-7” its top term for the year.
The pardoned swine is now scheduled to spend its days at a farm sanctuary “away from grills and cookware”, according to the event’s official press release.
“The pig pardon has become one of our favorite ways to kick off the end-of-year celebrations,” said Eric Castellanos, in a particularly upbeat message.
“It embodies the essence of Miami: vibrant, multicultural, and rooted in traditions that unite the community. Each year, we are proud to celebrate culture and compassion in a way unique to Miami.”
Participants enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach croquetas and Cuban coffee as they marked the pig's pardon.
