Fashion legend Antony Price, the influential style architect behind a series of unforgettable images worn by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has died aged 80.
His reputation was built on his defined forms and theatrical styles, including the light-hued ensembles that appeared in the iconic band Duran Duran's classic music video for "their hit Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance online."
This news arrives shortly after he debuted his latest collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Singer Lily Allen modelled a dress that paid homage to the famous black velvet "revenge dress" once worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price headed for London during the sixties to enroll at the prestigious Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he started his work in men's fashion at the company Stirling Copper and was the creator of the form-fitting, button-fly pants that Sir Mick Jagger sported during The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show opened with looks from supermodel Jerry Hall, who later wore the bridal gown Price designed for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
A frequent collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the memorable jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to fuse menswear and womenswear along with his expert craftsmanship in shaping sculptural silhouettes established him as a "one-of-a-kind talent," according to the British Fashion Council.
In the 1990s, he started creating pieces for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, including various looks for her US tour after becoming Duchess.
After a career spanning half a century, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London just last month in partnership with the design house 16Arlington.
Design circles says farewell to a true visionary whose influence on the visual landscape of music remains deeply ingrained.
