Contaminated Shrimp Issue: Indonesia Confronts Contamination in Major Manufacturing Zone

A significant industrial complex located in the suburbs of Jakarta is dealing with radioactive pollution after a government taskforce detected presence of the dangerous element Caesium-137 at 22 production facilities within the area, that encompasses businesses that export chilled seafood.

Indonesian officials initiated an inquiry after the US Food and Drug Administration identified Caesium-137, a nuclear isotope, in a shipment of frozen coated shrimp exported by a local firm.

Officials issued an advisory advising distributors and sellers to dispose of the product and avoid selling it, although the found amount was far below the agency's intervention limit. It added that the amount of Caesium-137 it had detected would not present an immediate hazard to consumers.

The authority explained: “The primary health effect of worry after extended, ongoing small amount contact (eg through consumption of contaminated products or water over time) is an elevated chance of the disease, resulting from damage to DNA within living cells.”

Extensive Contamination and Medical Checks

Radioactivity scans revealed at least twenty-two factories in the industrial area were affected. The official taskforce did not identify the twenty-one additional manufacturing facilities, but said they would immediately receive cleanup procedures conducted by the country's nuclear agency.

A senior official stated that people living in strongly polluted areas would be relocated until the location was cleaned, adding that the safety of the residents was the “top priority”.

Medical authorities additionally conducted checks on nearby employees and people located close to the manufacturing estate, identifying nine individuals who tested positive for contact to Caesium-137. These individuals were referred to a medical facility before being cleared to return home.

Cleanup and Isolation Plans

The affected sites will immediately undergo decontamination operations by the national atomic energy institute. Authorities have further designated the site of a scrap metal plant as an containment center for polluted materials.

Indonesia, which has no atomic energy facilities or weapons program, suspects that Caesium-137 may have entered the nation from abroad.

An official representative told reporters that scrap metal shipments were the likely cause of contamination and announced the authorities would immediately enforce restrictions on scrap metal arrivals.
