Marking a major shift in her coaching journey, the 34-year-old coach has stepped down from the England WU23 national team to be appointed head coach for NWSL expansion side Bay FC.
She takes over from Albertin Montoya, who led the San Jose-based club during its debut two seasons in the top-flight American league. Montoya had revealed in September his intention to resign at the end of the 2025 campaign, a season which saw Bay FC occupy a lowly 13th place in the 14-team standings.
âIt has been a privilege to serve my time with the FA,â commented Coates. âIt has helped shape me both professionally and personally. This feels like the right moment to test my abilities in a fresh challenge.â
In her time at the helm in 2023, Coates guided the England U23s through fixtures including a 1-0 victory over Norway in the continental competition and a high-scoring loss to the United States. Accompanying her to the United States is her right-hand woman, Gemma Davies, a ex- Aston Villa manager in the WSL.
The club's chief executive, a one-time Football Association technical lead, praised Coates's abilities: âEmma is not only an excellent coach, but she also has a proven track record of developing players to compete at the highest levels.â
âHer leadership qualities are exceptional of people and culture and has the football vision we were seeking,â added Cossington.
The California side experienced a contrasting start to its NWSL existence, securing a playoff spot and losing in the playoffs in its first year before struggling to a 13th-place finish in 2025.
The Football Association's new technical lead, Gavin Step, offered thanks to the outgoing coaches: âOur gratitude goes to Emma and Gemma for their service and extend our best wishes with their new challenge. Emma, with Gemma, has played a pivotal part in fortifying the pipeline between the WU23s and the senior squad.â
âTogether, they have directly shaped the development of many promising talents who have progressed into senior Lionesses,â he finished.
Since taking over Mo Marley in 2023, Coates has been integral to the rise of several players to the national team, including playmaker Lucia Kendallâwho recently scored her first Lionesses goalâand attackers Michelle Agyemang and Aggie Beever-Jones.
Discussions for new U23 coaching staff has already commenced, with the aim to continue the development of the Womenâs Under-23s setup in the seasons ahead.
