European Union economic leaders are gathering in the EU capital this morning to tackle the union's financial agenda, featuring the pressing question of financial support to Ukraine.

Ukraine's President Warns Country's Survival Depends on Allies

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy declared in a latest discussion that the country's survival relied on receiving additional financial aid from allies.

“We trust, with luck, they will approve the necessary funding,” he told reporters. Otherwise, “We will have to find another solution, it concerns our surviving. For this reason we need it urgently. We rely on our allies.”

EU Commission Advocates €140bn Compensation Funding

The EU executive still hopes to convince participating countries – and Belgium, which is currently blocking the plan due to juridical concerns – to move ahead on a €140 billion reparations loan based on frozen Russian assets.

EU chief Ursula von der Leyen emphasized today that it would be “the optimal method to sustain Kyiv's military and its economy.”

Resolution Postponed Until Year-End Summit

A final decision on the matter has been postponed until the EU leaders’s summit in the last month, as the financial support required at the start of the coming year.

Discussions Occur Amid Bribery Allegations in Kyiv

But these discussions are happening during a difficult time for Ukraine, as the president was forced to address rising popular anger in Ukraine over a corruption scandal in the power industry, firing two ministers allegedly involved in involvement in a extensive corruption network.

Danish economic affairs minister Stephanie Lose was asked about her reaction to the allegations, and insisted that there was commitment to keep aiding the Ukrainian people.

“Of course, The country will have to persistently focus with reforms, reinforcing every sector of the nation [and] that also applies to fighting graft … but there shouldn’t be any doubt that Europe stands firmly behind Ukraine,” she stated.

Other European Developments Monitored

In other news, observers will be monitoring Holland where the legislature convenes to examine potential ways ahead in the government formation process, Rome-Tirana discussions in Rome giving us the most recent opportunity to witness the remarkable Meloni-Rama dynamics, and a number of high-level conferences throughout the continent, including the Alliance's the secretary general's trip to a military installation in Germany.

Much to cover.

It’s November 13, November 13, 2025, and this is European Updates.

Welcome.
