Gavin Newsom, a well-known Democratic figure, has disclosed that he intends to make a decision about whether to run for president in 2028 once the 2026 midterm elections are over.
"Yes, I would be lying if I denied it," the governor remarked when pressed about contemplating a presidential run after the 2026 elections. "It wouldn't be the truth. And I won't do that."
Newsom's current term as California's leader ends in the start of 2027, and he is ineligible for re-election. However, he emphasized that any choice is a long way off.
"It's up to destiny," he said.
He has come to the forefront as a notable adversary of the former president's team, employing his online platforms and advocating for a ballot measure that would increase Democratic representation in Congress in following GOP gerrymandering. This move has made him a target from adversaries.
Donald Trump's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, alleged that Newsom does not care about the state's residents in a weekend appearance on Fox News. The secretary revealed plans to withhold taxpayer dollars from California and threatened eliminating the state's ability to issue trucking licenses.
"I intend to cut $160 million from California," he stated, in the wake of a recent tragic collision in the state involving an undocumented semi truck driver that caused fatalities and injured individuals.
Newsom's office pointed out that the national authorities had renewed the individual's authorization multiple times, which allowed him to obtain a commercial driver's license under national regulations.
Duffy had previously stated he was holding back $40m from the state for ignoring English language requirements for truck drivers.
"Former D-list reality star, now transportation chief, fails to grasp U.S. regulations," Newsom's office said in a previous release addressing the secretary's comments. "Meanwhile, as opposed to this individual, we focus on reality: California CDL holders had a fatal crash rate much lower than the countrywide rate. The state of Texas – the sole state with more commercial holders – has a rate substantially higher than the state. Data speaks for itself. This administration is dishonest."
A this month's poll revealed that a majority of the party and almost half of voters indicated that Newsom must consider running for the White House in the next election cycle. In recent years, his approval ratings has increased to an typical level of 33.5% from around 30%, while his negative ratings has decreased from an average of previous highs to 38.4%.
In previous months, Newsom remarked while traveling several swing states that he had "no clue" about his intentions for the next presidential election.
He noted his personal struggles, including being diagnosed with dyslexia at the young age of five.
"The thought that a guy who had modest test scores, who has ongoing difficulties with text, who was typically not at the front – the idea that you would even throw that out is, in and of itself, amazing," he commented. "No one can say? I am eager to see who presents themselves in the next election and who meets that moment. And that's the question for the U.S. citizens."
