A renowned South African radio and club DJ has been murdered in the nation's economic hub Johannesburg, causing national outrage across a nation grappling with entrenched crime.

Warrick Stock, who went by the name DJ Warras, was gunned down in the city centre on the afternoon of Tuesday.

Authorities reported the forty-year-old media personality was confronted by a trio of assailants, with one opened fire on him before fleeing on foot.

The reason behind the attack remains unclear and no suspects have been apprehended are in custody, police said.

Details of the Attack

Law enforcement revealed that Stock was ambushed as he was departing from a premises close to the Carlton Centre.

He had been present for hours at the building supervising the implementation of security systems, which had been illegally inhabited by squatters, it was reported.

"The report indicates the victim was approached by three unknown suspects after he parked his car, and they opened fire at him before fleeing the scene on foot," a police statement said.

CCTV footage reportedly captured a man with dreadlocked hair and dressed in what looked like a security uniform firing shots on Stock before running away.

The DJ tried to run away after he was shot but collapsed across the street.

It was further revealed that Stock had an unused firearm and nothing was taken during the attack.

Important clues, like cartridges, were found at the location.

Call for Public Assistance

Police have appealed anyone who saw the event who may have have information to assist with the investigation.

"Our information indicates they walked a long distance after the shooting, and officers have been attempting to locate them to find their whereabouts," added an official.

Family and Public Reaction

His sister, a close relative, expressed the relatives are devastated to process his death.

"I am in shock. I am shattered," were her words.
"We know he was a representative for countless citizens. He spoke out bravely about issues not many people were willing to speak about. This is a profound tragedy."

She urged the public to avoid sharing graphic images from the scene, explaining this was an extremely painful time, above all for Stock's young family.

Stock was the presenter of Ngicel' iVisa, a series that premiered on a popular local digital satellite entertainment channel.

Apart from his media career, Stock was involved in various commercial activities, including private security, offering high-level security services and securing major functions across South Africa.

He was also understood to participate in real estate operations and assisted with property reclaimations.

In a communication, the channel he worked for declared Stock was known for his magnetism, approachability and quick humor, adding that his legacy "will be remembered".
