Individuals Stopping Slimming Injections Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to Dieters

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

New research reveals that individuals who stop using new slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop conventional lifestyle regimens.

Research printed in a prominent medical journal shows that while obese individuals often shed a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"People purchasing these treatments must be aware of the danger of rapid weight regain when the therapy ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain implies a return to starting mass within about a year and a half.

Comparing Approaches

The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Researchers emphasize that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise generally see a more gradual creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Explaining the Quick Rebound

Doctors believe the way of the drugs explains the amplified weight return.

These medications imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Chronic Condition?

Health authorities recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians argue that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment is often long-term.

This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "underscore the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

People who have come off the medication explain a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"I experienced something activating and you become ravenous," recalled a patient.

This difficulty is worsened if users have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Significant Use

Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.

  • Use is more common among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts stress that while the jabs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated behavioural management.
