Lost Bach Compositions Performed for First-Ever Performance in 320 Years

Historical organ composition
The composer is believed to have created the two organ pieces at the start of his musical journey

Previously unknown organ compositions by Johann Sebastian Bach have been revealed and played in the central European country for the first time in 320 years.

The country's Culture Minister the cultural official labeled the discovery of the two compositions a "important event for the musical community".

They first caught the attention of a Bach researcher in the early nineties when he was cataloguing the composer's papers at the Belgian royal collection.

The organ pieces - the Chaconne composition in D minor and G minor composition - were dating unknown and unsigned. The researcher spent the following three decades working to confirm the identity of the pieces.

Historic Performance

They were performed at the Thomas Church in the German city, where Bach is buried and where he served as a church musician for 27 years.

The two pieces were executed by organist from the Netherlands the musical performer, who said he was proud to be able to perform them for the initial performance in three hundred twenty years.

He said the pieces were "remarkably sophisticated" and would be "a valuable resource for organists today, as they are also suitable for reduced-scale organs".

Historical Significance

They are believed to have been created during Bach's formative years, when he was serving as an organ instructor in the community of Arnstadt in Thuringia.

Mr Wollny, who is now the director of the musical archive in the city, said they demonstrated several features unique to the musical genius.

"Musically, the compositions also include elements that can be observed in the composer's creations from this period, but not in those of other musicians," he said.

They are considered to have been written down in the early eighteenth century by one of Bach's pupils, the musical student.

At a presentation of the pieces, Mr Wollny said he was "almost completely confident that Bach had composed the two pieces" and they have now been added into the official catalogue of his works.
