New Year's Revelers Advised to Wrap Up Warm with Snow Predicted Across the UK

Meteorologists are reporting a chilly commencement to the new year, with snow likely over large parts of the UK. Revelers are advised to wrap up as near-freezing temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.

Festive Events Continue Despite Warnings

Edinburgh's renowned Hogmanay festivities are expected to take place, a contrast to last year's cancellation. This proceeds amid advisories for snow over northern Scotland.

"A cold New Year's Eve evening for those partying, so warmer clothes will be essential," said the national forecaster.

Celebrations Under Mostly Clear but Chilly Skies

Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is likely to be ideal for fireworks shows, with no rain and open skies. The mercury are expected to be chilly, so warm wraps essential, according to forecasters.

Further north, skies will be cloudier, but this is not anticipated to hamper visibility for watching fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.

Extensive Snow Warnings for Friday

Moving into Friday, advisories are in place for Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and most of the south-east of England.

  • Travel is expected to be disrupted.
  • Travelers should to leave additional time for journeys on the road.
  • Disruptions and cancellations are anticipated on trains and buses.

Temperatures Set to Drop Further

With the start of 2026, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are forecast to fall even more as wintry showers and strong winds are predicted to affect the north of the country.

Around 10cm of snow is forecast to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the top roads and uplands.

Public Health Alerts Released

At the same time, serious cold weather health warnings have been activated for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to continue until noon on 5 January, with temperatures forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Authorities stated this signified the weather was likely to cause significant impacts across health and social care services. This encompasses a potential rise in the number of deaths among those with health conditions or those in the older age groups.

The message for all is clear: to welcome the new year in safely, preparing for winter conditions is absolutely key.
