The racing series is embarking on what is potentially the largest technical shift in its illustrious history for the 2026 campaign, featuring revised car and engine specifications and the required adoption of 100% sustainable fuels.

The updated 1.6-litre V6 turbo hybrids, which keep the 1.6-litre V6 turbo hybrid, boast a substantially higher battery power, requiring significant developments in the vehicles' aerodynamic design.

What's the New Technology?

  • Active Aerodynamics: Both the nose and rear wings move automatically – opening on the high-speed sections for minimal air resistance and increased velocity, and sealing in the turns for maximum downforce.
  • Energy Harvesting: The system can harvest energy with energy harvested under braking, or during partial power application at the straight's end or in certain corners where only reduced throttle is used.

2026 Car Specifications

The next-generation machines will be reduced in size and weight relative to current models, with a car length shortened by 200mm to 3,400mm, width cut by 100mm – down to 1,900mm – and the car weight reduced by 30kg.

Overall downforce is anticipated to be reduced by approximately 15-30%, although squads will naturally regain performance as they refine their designs.

Drag has been cut by 40%. The cars will utilize active aerodynamics – both wings will move on the straight sections to improve speed and increase straightline speed and return into place for optimal grip in corners.

Wheels will continue to use 18-inch rims, but the rubber compounds will be reduced in width, by 25 millimetres on the front axle and 30mm at the rear.

What's Changing in the Engines?
