The Details Known Regarding the Those Lost of the Bondi Terrorist Incident

At least 16 individuals lost their lives and in excess of 40 sustained injuries when attackers fired on a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local police have labeled a terrorist attack.

According to the most recent information, authorities have confirmed the number of fatalities is 16, including one of the suspected attackers. Moreover, 42 wounded individuals were transported to the hospital.

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Reportedly a father of five children, he worked as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and acquaintances remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative said.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.

She described the moments before the attack, stating they had been standing together when the gunfire erupted. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.

The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced immense hardship in their youth. They had later moved to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Publicly, the Foreign Minister declared that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the statement read.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospitals, a significant number remain receiving treatment, with five in serious condition. Those hurt include two police officers who responded to the attack.

A wounded man is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the attackers. Called a hero, he received gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Reports indicate he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he described the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the actions of those who rushed to help. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the attack. He said he listened to “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
