The Golden State is Fully Free of Drought for the First Time in 25 Years.
After a quarter-century span, every region of the state is facing drought conditions. This landmark event follows grueling years marked by a lack of precipitation that exacerbated wildfire risks and pressured its huge agribusiness.
An Update Shows An Absence of Abnormally Dry Areas
Thursday's report from the federal monitoring program showed that all of California is free from drought or abnormal dryness. This development came after weeks of heavy precipitation that helped fill water storage sites like Oroville and Shasta exceeding their historic averages.
“To those aged 25 and below you’ve only known in a world where California has been in or emerging from drought,” stated a climate scientist.
Following Powerful Weather to Wet Holidays
The path to this point involved intense and deadly winter storms that pummeled the state in recent years, causing widespread flooding, power outages, and deaths. Although that weather began to alleviate the drought, they fell short of ending it.
Until late December, areas like northeastern California were deemed unusually parched. Substantial precipitation at the start of the new year eliminated those last vestiges of dryness.
Essential Mountain Snowfall Presents a Challenge
But, experts warn that the end of drought status is not the same as complete water security. Latest data of the Sierra Nevada snowpack show it at roughly seven-tenths of the historical norm.
This mountain snow, which supplies a significant portion of the state's water as it thaws later in the year, is a critical factor for future water availability. Water officials have emphasized that it is not yet time to draw conclusions for the coming year.
“The trend we’re looking at right now is increased rainfall over snowfall,” commented a state water resources manager. “The goal is the snow accumulation to improve by April 1st so that we’re nearer to normal.”
Although the monitor shows a clean slate, the focus now shifts to maintaining this hard-won hydrological health throughout the coming seasons.
