The Kindness of People We Don't Know: The Way a Man I Only Just Encountered Helped Me Land the Job That Altered My Path

In the late 1980s, I was beginning a budget travel adventure to Europe with a companion. Since my companion was considering enrolling in graduate studies in NYC, we had booked a fortnight visit there en route to London.

We arrived at the student accommodation, a sizeable ten-floor structure on the Upper West Side known as International House. Once we unpacked, we went directly to the canteen, where we picked up meals, found a table, and engaged in conversation with fellow residents.

Sitting next to me was an individual of Iraqi origin studying engineering at Columbia University. He asked me what I my profession was, and I explained that I had just graduated with a scientific background and had been conducting research with electron microscopy.

He noted that there was an research lab at the university – close to the engineering department, which was the reason he was familiar with it. He proposed that I ought to seek a position with them. I chuckled at the suggestion, saying that I was about to fly to Europe and, more critically, I lacked a US visa.

The next day I went out exploring, going back to the cafeteria that night. The man from Iraq approached me and informed me that he had arranged an interview for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Given that he had taken the effort, I attended the interview – but straight off explained to my interviewer that I didn’t have a visa, so I was probably wasting her time.

As is common in NYC – a city where everything seems achievable – she declared: “That can be arranged. When can you start?” I never got on that flight to London.

I was employed there for 36 months. One of the benefits was that I also received no-cost classes at Columbia, and I seized the chance to finish a master’s of international affairs.

We didn't cross paths after that and I am unaware of his full name, but his selfless gesture transformed my future in so many ways. I didn't possess the bravery or self-assurance to reach out at an elite institution and request employment. Additionally, I had consistently hoped to take classes in another country, but lacked the financial means without that educational benefit.

What's more, that job in New York resulted in a role in Europe where I met my wonderful partner, with whom I now have four amazing children. It was a total sliding doors moment. That helpful person set me on a different course in life, and I’m always appreciative.
