The Mighty Nein's Opening Sequence Chose the Wrong Popular RPG Show Song
This latest animated series, the most recent animated series by Critical Role, unveiled a new introductory sequence. It features the beloved group of outcasts, misfits, and rogues kicking ass and taking names, while teasing at several heart-wrenching backstories for key figures such as the voice actor's wizard Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, Fjord.
All in all, the opening looks amazing. But I couldn't help feeling that an element was lost in the song choice.
This sequence employs "Welcome to Wildemount", an exceptional composition created by artist Colm McGuinness. This piece originating from the soundtrack album of the same name, the second one put out by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division their music brand. It's a wonderful sentimental option, and I believe that fans of the second campaign will love its inclusion.
But for me, The series' opening doesn't quite capture the hype and excitement that accompanied the show's live-play sessions. "Your Turn to Roll", composed by musician Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit for me when it was initially unveiled in 2015, and it improved further when co-founder Sam Riegel added lyrics to the tune for the animated Campaign 2 opening in 2018.
Featuring vocals from Ashley Johnson, another performer, Travis Willingham, as well as the writer, the song was catchy and fun. At the time, I hadn't even watched the follow-up series yet, but this was such an earworm that I still saved it on my device. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an installment of adventurous fun.
The show's opening with "the new song" doesn't strike the same chords in my opinion. It's a grand piece of music, but from what I know of this party, I feel that its tone is somewhat mismatched.
Naturally, the creators has stated that the series will have some changes and variations from the original live sessions. An adjusted mood for its intro seems to be one of them.
This animated adventure will be released on Prime Video from Nov. 19. For those eager until then, or wish to prepare to get to know the characters of the second series, the original episodes are accessible on the audio platform and the video site.
