The musician gives twenty-five thousand pounds Mercury Prize to grassroots live spaces

Sam Fender received the Mercury Prize recently in his hometown

The star has donated the entirety of his £25k honor winnings to the trust for venues, which works to protect the UK's independent concert spaces.

He was awarded the cheque on mid-October as his latest record People Watching was chosen as the top album of the previous year.

Fender has opted to hand the money over to the MVT, in acknowledgment of the vital role grassroots venues played in his initial steps.

"I personally couldn't be pursuing my current career if it wasn't for all the performances I performed around the North East, and elsewhere, when I was beginning," stated the artist. "These venues are renowned, but they are struggling."

From early 2023 onward, over 150 of these spaces have ceased operations – about 16% of the total UK scene.

In the last year, major artists including Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all supported the MVT in its attempts to support the industry, by applying a modest fee to their ticket prices, which benefits local stages.

Sam Fender also participated, raising over £100k on his live tour to help thirty-eight small stages across England, Scotland, and Wales.

The money assisted venues that were facing potential shutdown due to difficulties arising from floods, blazes and personal losses, as well as permit problems, court cases and neighbor objections.

Additional spaces obtained monetary aid in modernizing facilities and technical equipment that positively impacted artists and concertgoers.

"The concept that revenue from concerts in major spaces helps the independent spots, where it kicks off for musicians like me, is just logical," Fender has stated.

Fender is far from the only musician to give his Mercury Prize winnings to worthy causes.

When Pulp received the trophy in 1996 for their release Different Class, frontman the singer stated that the band would contribute their cash to the non-profit the charity.

That year, rapper and singer she shared her bounty between multiple good causes, such as the children's charity and a Sickle Cell charity.

"I also gave a grand to my local community centre, to their gymnastics class, because I practiced gymnastics when I was a child and they lacked better apparatus," the artist told the media.

In recent years, Ezra Collective contributed their prize money to the community center that supported their act, in addition to other independent music bodies.

And winners that year the group donated their prize to a multiple sclerosis charity after a acquaintance was identified with the condition.

"The victory was sufficient," said vocalist Heather Small. "The money was the extra but we didn't need the cherry, because we had the main prize. So our winning touched the lives of others."

Last week, the trust announced it had rescued several grassroots venues in the South East, by transferring them to community ownership.

The Joiners in the city and the other in Bristol were purchased under the community ownership scheme, which is funded by a national body and supporters who buy "stakes" in the properties.
