In October of last year, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, not long after, the network launched a brand-new animated series with a distinctly unique vibe. Haha, You Clowns proved to be heartwarming and calm, evoking a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. During a period often characterized by bleakness, this show's wholesomeness found an audience and propelled it a surprise hit.
In mid-December, the network confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two more seasons. This provides creator Joe Cappa a massive runway to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The series follows three polite teenage brothers whose defining trait is their strong bond for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four main characters.
"I’m so grateful to the fans of the show who took a chance on the show and shared it with others," remarked Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for a little longer."
The official statement also included laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He specifically highlighted the fans who embraced the show and supported its uniquely offbeat sensibility.
"All of you showed up for this new show, championed for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something unexpectedly cozy about watching this charming family navigate their everyday routines.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa shared his desire to move the comedy genre beyond its current sarcastic tone. He attributed this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we keep returning to,” said Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we need to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa has the opportunity to catalyze that very evolution. If nothing else, the renewal ensures audiences a little more time to experience the warm glow of the endearing Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is available for streaming on HBO Max.
