Citizens have assembled across the country to mark the second anniversary since the Hamas-led attack on 7 October 2023, as negotiations continued in Egypt over an end to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.
The attack resulted in over 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others abducted back to Gaza as hostages. It was the most most fatal day for Jews since the Second World War.
Israel answered by initiating a military offensive in Gaza which has killed over 67,000 people, according to the territory's Hamas-run health ministry. Its statistics are regarded as accurate by the UN and other global organizations.
"The violent enemies have struck forcefully, but they have not defeated us," Benjamin Netanyahu stated on that day.
He also promised to "realize all the objectives of the war: the homecoming of all the kidnapped, the removal of the Hamas administration and the promise that Gaza will never again create a risk to Israel".
The national leadership postponed state remembrance events until October 16th - after the end of the Jewish High Holiday season - but events still occurred throughout the country on that day.
A remembrance service for the loved ones of Israelis killed in the Hamas attack was conducted in the coastal city. Organized by the families themselves, it was broadcast throughout Israeli TV networks.
Hours earlier, a minute's silence was held around the country.
At the same time, Israeli and Hamas delegations met in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of the Egyptian city for a second day of third-party negotiations to discuss the terms of the agreement.
A senior representative familiar with the negotiations said that an late session of mediated discussions began at 7 PM local time.
The representative said the morning session concluded without concrete outcomes, due to conflicting views over the suggested Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas seeks to ensure Israel does not recommence fighting after the first phase of the deal.
He added that the talks are "tough and have still not produce any significant progress," but pointed out that intermediaries are making efforts to close the disparities between the conflicting groups.
In Tel Aviv's memorial area earlier, young a woman - whose family member survived the attack on the gathering, where 378 people were murdered and many more were taken hostage by Hamas gunmen - told: "No location appears as home any longer and until each abducted person come back none of us will have peace of mind."
"Once we see everyone home once more, we can feel relief anew. Then we can begin to recover," she continued.
Outside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's official dwelling in the capital, people congregated to show their solidarity for the families of the captives. Israel says 48 remain in captivity in Gaza, 20 of whom are thought to be surviving.
Activist one woman stated: "It's necessary do any agreement necessary for the hostages to come back home. But we sincerely need guarantees that we will be protected."
Research now consistently show that about seventy percent of the population want the hostilities to finish in exchange for the freedom of the hostages.
At the location of Nova festival, mourners came together to pay their respects.
From there, the boom of military attacks and explosions could be heard just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where observers indicated the heavy Israeli shelling continued.
In Gaza City, attacks were reported in the dawn of that day in the west side Tal al-Hawa, Rimal and Nasr areas and in the east side area of Sheikh Radwan, as well Shati refugee camp to the northwest.
"As the evening comes, the dread comes with it," evacuated Gaza City resident a local woman, whose young son was lost his life by an Israeli aerial attack earlier, shared.
"We are fearful of the attacks. All the night we are lying together, holding each other, notably my smallest child who places his head on me the entire evening."
"Every second we monitor the news to see the situation. And I'm worried that this truce will not be finalized and that the fighting will return to us."
