The Two Fatalities Identified in Brown University Attack as Law Enforcement Persist in Search for Perpetrator.

The pair of scholars who lost their lives in the weekend's mass shooting at Brown University were honored at the start of the week – as a manhunt for their assailant carried on following the freeing by authorities in Rhode Island of the sole person detained in connection in the case.

Tributes for Ella Cook

The student Ella Cook, a second-year student from Alabama, was remembered as “a wonderful, steady, devout, shining presence”, according to the Birmingham's Cathedral Church of the Advent, which paid tribute to her at a ceremony on Sunday.

Cook was the vice-presidency of Brown’s branch of the College Republicans organization, as the club stated. The White House press secretary also expressed words of sorrow on social media, stating: “There are no words. Thinking of her kin and peers, especially her parents.”

The Second Victim

The other deceased individual was MukhammadAziz Umurzokov from Uzbekistan, a citizen of Uzbekistan in his freshman year at the Ivy League university, family members said.

Umurzokov’s identity was officially acknowledged by Uzbekistan’s foreign ministry.

“He possessed remarkable kindness, humor, and intelligence. His ambitions were lofty of entering the field of neurosurgery and helping people,” his sibling Samira said in a memorial statement.

Details of the Attack

An additional nine individuals were injured in the weekend shooting in the engineering department of Brown’s university in Providence, during the university's examination week.

Authorities said late Sunday that a 24-year-man arrested in a search at a Hampton Inn about 17 miles from the scene earlier in the day was released from custody.

“A perpetrator remains free,” stated Rhode Island’s attorney general, Peter Neronha.

Neronha explained, “Occasionally a probe goes down a path, and then you have to regroup and head another way, and that is the current situation over the last approximately one day.”

Public Fear

The city's mayor, Brett Smiley, admitted: “It is expected to provoke fresh anxiety for our public”.

The shooter began shooting inside a room in the building on Saturday, discharging in excess of 40 shots from a handgun, a police source told the news agency.

Officers that raided the lodging found a pair of pistols and magazines when the suspect was taken into custody, according to reports.

The Wounded Victims

Of the nine hurt, a single scholar was released from the hospital, stated the university president, Christina Paxson. Seven others were in critical but stable condition, and another was critically ill, authorities stated on Sunday.

A private school, a private K-12 school in the city of Durham, said a recent graduate, Kendall Turner, was among those critically wounded.

More Condolences

Tributes were paid to Cook at a religious service in Birmingham on Sunday. A clergyman said, “She shone as a remarkable, stable, devout beacon not only in her youth... but at the university she was a shining example in that institution as well.”

The president of College Republicans, Martin Bertao, released remarks from the organization. “Ella was known for her bold, brave, and kind heart as she aided her club and fellow classmates,” he said.

Jonathan Henick, Jonathan Henick, said he was “deeply saddened” by the student's death in a tribute. “Our profound condolences go out to his relatives, loved ones, and fellow students and lament the passing of his bright future.”

Broader Statistics

Saturday’s killings at Brown, the country's seventh most historic college with about 7,300 undergraduate and postgraduate students, occurred during one of at least 392 mass shootings reported in the US so far in 2025, according to records. Monday was the 349th day of the year.
