US Armed Forces Executes Lethal Attack in Eastern Pacific, Resulting in 4 Deaths
According to a high-ranking military official, the American military carried out a lethal kinetic engagement on a vessel in the eastern Pacific, resulting in the deaths of four people.
“Joint Task Force Southern Spear carried out a deadly attack on a craft operated by a terrorist group in international waters. Intelligence verified the vessel was transiting along a known drug smuggling route and was engaged in narco-trafficking operations. All four male drug traffickers were eliminated, and no US military forces were harmed.”
Background and Prior Actions
The statement follows a day after an announcement regarding a naval blockade of all sanctioned oil tankers to and from Venezuela. That statement on online platforms, the US president accused Venezuela of using oil revenues to fund narcotics smuggling and criminal activities, vowing to increase the military presence.
Just on the previous day, the Pentagon stated it had carried out strikes on three boats suspected of trafficking drugs in the Pacific, leading to the deaths of eight people. Beginning on 2 September, more than 20 military engagements have killed at least 99 people, most off the coast of Venezuela.
Government Justifies Actions Amidst Scrutiny
The administration has faced growing demands to make public video of a 2 September vessel attack. But, the defense secretary have refused to do so. The administration has defended its campaign as a successful operation, arguing it has stopped drugs from reaching US shores and has pushed back on concerns that it is exceeding the bounds of lawful warfare.
While the administration has stated the operation is about stopping drugs destined for the US, remarks from a senior aide appeared to confirm a broader political objective. In a recently published interview, the chief of staff remarked the leader “wants to keep on blowing boats up until Venezuela's president cries uncle.”
This indicates the military campaign may be part of a push to remove Venezuela's current government.
